The New Year is all about resolving to be more- more healthy, more energetic, more cheerful. That is a difficult challenge when the most popular way to jump start your plan is a glass of juice when it’s below freezing outside. The other issue is- what is everyone ELSE going to eat while you try to clean up your nutritional act? A cleanse does not mean the rest of the family doesn’t need dinner. The answer is a trend that began gathering steam last year and is the best winter cleanse for cold weather-souping. Healthy, plant-based soups that help you detox and cleanse, but that can also feed your family (augmented by a pasta, roast chicken, salad or whatever else appeals to your loved ones).
What is Souping?
Souping is a cleanse based on a 1, 3 or 5 day cleanse of 5 soups a day. The soups can be warm or cold and are generally plant based. Because soup retains much of the fiber from the ingredients the result is feeling much fuller than you would on a traditional juice cleanse. Soups can be made in ahead of time and there are some great cookbooks for making big batches in advance. A great book is Soupelina’s Soup Cleanse: Plant-Based Soups and Broths to Heal Your Body, Calm Your Mind and Transform Your Life by Elina Fuhrman. Soupelina is a California based service that delivers soups to your door- if you live in California. I checked out the book and the recipes are simple and easy to make and freeze- especially helpful if you’d like to feed a family.
If you’d prefer to try some soup recipes without the investment in a cookbook- here are two terrific articles. One is from Pop Sugar offering a wide variety of soups that encourages “the trend without the spend” (a day of soups delivered by a service can cost $85 or more for one person). Or this article from Clean Eating which offers a meal plan and even a shopping list. This plan includes some smoothies and roast vegetables but is a great way to ease into a healthier eating plan with your family.
